Description
La Cinquantaine was written by Jean Gabriel Prosper Marie (1852-1928) in 1887 and dedicated to E. Binon, a cellist in the opera orchestra in Paris. The title refers to a 50th anniversary, quite possibly a Golden Wedding Anniversary. There are other arrangements of this piece for octet and string orchestra as well as a jazz version made famous by Woody Herman’s orchestra in 1940.
In this arrangement for double bass and piano, the double bass part lies mostly on the G string, the highest note the octave G. It is in three parts, the first in G minor , the second in G major and the third section is a recapitulation of the first. It is a lyrical piece.
