Description
This Gavotte has a mock 18th century style and is a wonderful vehicle to show off the characteristics of the double bass as a solo instrument. It covers the full range of the bass from ‘orchestral’ positions through thumb position to the harmonics at the end of the fingerboard.
This piece has long been attributed to Antonio Lorenzitti, but was almost certainly written by Édouard Nanny. It was further popularised by Gary Karr who added the story of ‘The Elephant and the Fly’ to the music and played it extensively in children’s concerts in the 1970s and 1980s. The first edition was published by Alphonse Leduc and edited by Édouard Nanny, Professor of double bass at the Paris Conservatoire, but it seems most likely Nanny was the composer rather than the editor!
